Interior & Environmental Design

The Interior and Environmental Design sequence prepares students to design innovative, functional, supportive and responsible interior environments that positively impact the quality of life.

The curriculum develops students' skills and knowledge in color and design, drafting, space planning, building and interior systems, materials and finishes, historical interiors, building and barrier-free codes, and Auto-CAD. The needs of special populations and the mandates that regulate the field of interior design are emphasized.

Our undergraduate program is accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA), formerly FIDER, and emphasizes commercial interior design.  Our graduates are typically employed by one of the Top 100 Design firms, such as Gensler, SpAce, Callison, IA Interior Architects, The Gettys Group, Design Forum and Environments Group in Chicago, St. Louis, and other major cities.

Course content is based on the knowledge and skills needed to pass the National Council for Interior Design Qualification licensing exam.

Interior Design Drafting Laboratory

All interior and environmental design studio courses are taught in this recently-remodeled laboratory. The laboratory contains 30 individual drafting tables for studio courses, a group work area in the back of the room, one resource library room and an open work area. The drafting laboratory has a teaching workstation with a networked computer and monitor, a projection system for the computer, document camera and slide to video converter.

Computer Drafting Laboratory

Interior design and apparel design students and faculty have access to the Department of Technology’s primary computer drafting laboratory. TEC 110 Introduction to MicroCAD and TEC 211 Architectural Drafting, required courses, are taught in this laboratory. Interior design and apparel design students also have access to this laboratory and Turner 202 during open lab times to utilize AutoCAD. The interior design plotter is housed in this laboratory and is used by both FCS and Technology students. This lab houses 28 Pentium 3.4 GHz, 2.0 GB RAM computers with the latest software.
