OSF St. Joseph's Hospital, Bloomington, IL

At OSF St. Joseph's Medical Center, interns get exposure to the roles and duties of diet aides, diet techs, and dietitians. The intern learns documentation formats for care plans, outpatient forms and medical records. Interns are exposed to a variety of patients at this facility.

 

Methodist Medical Center, Peoria, IL

Founded near the turn-of-the-century by three Methodist Deaconesses, today Methodist Medical Center provides a wide range of services across the health care continuum including:

  • Inpatient hospital care in our 336-bed tertiary care facility conveniently located off Interstate 74 in Peoria; nursing units include cardiac/surgical, medical/cardiac, rehabilitation, obstetrics, pediatrics, oncology, medical/respiratory, cardiac/medical intensive care, surgical intensive care, adult, adolescent, child mental health, transitional (skilled nursing) care.

  • Outpatient services include: surgery, mental health, medical imaging and diagnostic testing, pain management and headache clinic, certified sleep disorders center, emergency medicine.

  • A primary care physicians' network.

  • Home health, home infusion, and private duty nursing care.

  • Hospice care.

  • Partial hospitalization services for child, adolescent, and adult mental health.

  • Pastoral Care services.

Proctor Hospital, Peoria, IL

Proctor Hospital is located in Peoria, IL. Proctor was established at this location on April 4, 1959. We serve patients with a variety of needs: cardiac, medical, skilled nursing, emergency, intensive care, orthopedic, neurological, family maternity, and addiction recovery. We also have a large outpatient population including: outpatient surgery, lab work, diagnostic imaging, cardiopulmonary function testing, sleep disorders, and wound clinic. Our mission is to "improve the quality of life of our patients and community by providing quality health care services."

 

BroMenn Regional Medical Center, Normal, IL

BroMenn is a community owned and operated health care system that has a total of 281 hospital beds in both Normal and Eureka, Illinois. BroMenn serves the needs of both inpatient and outpatient, including community groups, home health care, and hospice care. Our mission is "To provide the health and will-being of our communities by education, healing, and serving within the context of our Judeo-Christian heritage."

 

Decatur Memorial Hospital, Decatur, IL

Decatur Memorial Hospital's mission is to, "Improve the health of the people of Central Illinois." This hospital serves the needs of both inpatients and outpatients. Interns will learn the skills of nutritional screening, assessment, and medical documentation. Working in a team environment with other dietitians, interns will have the opportunities to assist a variety of patients.

 

Memorial Medical Center, Springfield, IL

The mission of Memorial Health Systems is to, "Restore, maintain, and improve the health of the people and communities we serve." This rotation will serve as a two-week requirement for all interns. The rotation is designed to provide students with opportunities to expand their knowledge of clinical nutrition care. Throughout the two weeks, interns will assess patients in various conditions and units including: burn, ICU, Renal, Psychiatric, Eating Disorders, and Transplant.

Food Service Sites

District 87 , Bloomington, IL

District 87 provides a food service management component for the ISU Dietetics Internship program. Interns to District 87 work in the administration building as well as in the six elementary, junior high, and high school cafeterias. The district serves 5,800 students from K through 12 grades. It also operates an early childhood center for 200 three and four year olds. Interns rotating through this food service site have opportunities to work with staff training, personnel recruitment, catering operations, USDA free and reduced applications and reimbursement claims, computerized point of sale operations, software troubleshooting, wellness articles for the staff newsletter, nutritional analysis of menus, development of cycle menus and standardized recipes and have opportunities to attend a variety of professional meetings and food shows.

 

Illinois State University, Normal, IL

During the rotation at Campus Dining Services, interns work with the administration staff in planning and implementing programs and projects. Interns attend departmental meetings throughout the rotation. Projects include menu planning, marketing, and recipe development. Campus Dining Services utilizes Computrition, a computer software system to perform food management functions (ordering, inventory, menu planning and analyses, recipe quantification and analysis). The intern uses Computrition to perform these tasks. Additional experiences include catering functions, participation in the further development of the HAACP program, development of nutrition education materials for college students and nutrition promotions centered around nutrition and body image.

 

Olympia Schools, McLean County

Olympia School District #16 is located in Stanford, IL. This rotation site provides a food service management component of the internship. Students working at Olympia would work in the food service administration office as well as the high school, middle school, and three elementary schools.

 

McLean County Unit District #5, Normal, IL

Interns at Unit 5 will have opportunities to work with the food service of over 11,000 students in 15 elementary schools, 3 Junior Highs, and 2 High Schools. Projects will include development of cycle menus, standardization of recipes, staff training, USDA free and reduced applications and reimbursement claims, and nutritional analysis of menus.

Community Nutrition Sites

Macon County WIC, Decatur, IL

The Macon County Women, Infant, and Children clinic is part of the Macon County Health Department. Macon County WIC services Decatur and all of the surrounding areas. WIC is dedicated to providing nutrition information and free food to help mothers, babies, and children under five years old get the nutrients and education they need for proper growth and development.

Dietetic Interns at Macon County WIC counsel prenatal women and teenagers on proper nutrition and promote breastfeeding and its advantages. The Macon County WIC program places a strong emphasis on the nutritional benefits of breastfeeding for infants and their mothers. Interns also teach proper feeding methods and nutrition for children throughout their first five years of life.

Because Macon County WIC is located in the Macon County Health Department interns are given the opportunity to work with other agencies in the health department that promote nutrition education.

 

McLean County WIC, Bloomington, IL

The McLean County Women, Infant, Children clinic services McLean County and the surrounding areas. WIC provides nutrition information and supplemental foods to pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children up to the age of 5.

 

Peoria EFNEP, Peoria, IL

University of Illinois Extension - Peoria County Expanded Food & Nutrition Education Program

Family Nutrition Program

The University of Illinois Extension in Peoria County is a part of the Federal Extension Service of the US Department of Agriculture. Interns spend field experience in Community Nutrition with the Extension Educator Nutrition & Wellness & Program Assistants in the Expanded Food & Nutrition Education Program and Family Nutrition Program. EFNEP & FNP provide nutrition education to limited resource families and youth and food stamp and food stamp eligible people. The mission of the University of Illinois Extension is "Helping People Help Themselves." Interns observe nutrition education to pregnant teens and women, mothers of infants, preschool parents, preschool children, school age children, youth, adults, seniors and handicapped and mentally challenged individuals. They will observe nutrition education in individual home visits, group programs, school programs, after school programs and programs at agencies, churches, housing projects and community centers.

 

Community Cancer Center, Normal, IL

The Community Cancer Center is a joint venture of BroMenn Healthcare and OSF St. Joseph Medical Center that combines the resources of both to meet its mission of improving the health status of individuals by providing comprehensive, community based cancer care. The Center focuses on outpatient care and includes services such as radiation therapy, medical oncology, promotion of prevention, early detection and screening, and community education.

Activities of the dietetic intern during the community rotation will include outpatient counseling for cancer treatment and reducing cancer risks with nutrition and lifestyle. You will be involved in various community presentations such as health fairs and cooking demonstrations. The rotation will expose you to other areas of community nutrition such as Complimentary and Alternative Medicine, web-site development and other media experiences as available.

 

Decatur Memorial Hospital Wellness Center, Decatur, IL
The Wellness Center is located in Forsyth, IL and is home to the Adult Weight Management Program. Clients can choose a weight loss program that best fits their lifestyle. Responsibilities will include instructing classes, preparing educational materials, conducting start up appointments, meeting with clients during clinic, facilitating cooking classes, attending health fairs, and working with other members of the weight management team.

 

Methodist Medical Center Diabetes Care and CHIPS Program, Peoria, IL
The Methodist Diabetes Care Center provides services, support, and education for individuals recently diagnosed with diabetes, as well as for those who need to review or improve their diabetes management.
