Current Illinois State Students
Welcome to the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences!
The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences encompasses synergistic, integrative fields of study that address the well-being of individuals, families, and communities. We focus on enhancing human lives -from healthy diet and exercise to satisfying personal relationships to sustainable environments and consumer products. Our programs of study prepare students to work and succeed in the global environment of the 21st century. To attain these goals there are five distinct programs in the department: Apparel, Merchandising, and Design; Food, Nutrition, and Dietetics; Human Development and Family Resources; Interior and Environmental Design; and Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher Education.
The faculty in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences truly support the core values of Educating Illinois. They provide individualized attention to create an atmosphere in and out of the classroom to support the pursuit of learning and scholarship, to promote civic engagement, and honor diversity.
The Family and Consumer Sciences Department at Illinois State University has a rich tradition of excellence. The undergraduate program is among the 20% of all higher education units nationwide accredited by the Council for Accreditation of the American Association for Family and Consumer Sciences, the premiere accrediting body of the profession. In addition, the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences holds accreditations from the Council for Interior Design Accreditation, the Council for Accreditation for Dietetic Education, and the National Council for Teacher Education.
