Plans of Study

Below are four-year and transfer student plans of study for each of the majors within the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences that students can download (in PDF format). Students should refer to their Illinois State catalog for courses that satisfy the general education (inner, middle and outer core) requirements and B.S./B.A. degree requirement.

Transfer students should refer to the transfer student page and the transfer student sample plan of study.

It is recommended that students meet with their academic advisor regularly to discuss their plan of study.

Refer to the Illinois State University Undergraduate Catalog for course descriptions, prerequisites and additional degree requirements.

Food Nutrition and Dietetics

Students in Food Nutrition and Dietetics (FND) are encouraged to complete a Bachelor of Science degree versus a Bachelor of Arts degree.  Chemistry 220 (Organic Chemistry) is required for FND students and satisfies the Bachelor of Science Graduation Requirement in Science, Mathematics and Technology.

Teacher Education

Students who complete this program will be certified to teach family and consumer sciences in the public school system at the secondary level (grades 6-12). Additional courses, C&I 233 and PSY 302, may be completed to earn a middle school endorsement as well.

Students pursuing FCS Teacher Education should review the University-Wide Teacher Education requirements in the Illinois State University Catalog, and use this link to the University-Wide Teacher Education Performance-Based Requirements Check List to help understand and manage their way through Gateway I, II, and III requirements. This information is also posted to the internal FCS Advising Blackboard.

It is recommended that students progress through the Professional Education requirements in the following order:

  • Begin the process leading to Admission to Teacher Education.  This may take more than a semester.  Take the State of Illinois Basic Skills Test  in reading, writing, and mathematics as soon as possible.  Information bulletins are available in DeGarmo 56.  There are no prerequisites for it.  Students must pass all sections of the State of Illinois Basic Skills Test before they can register for C&I 216.
  • EAF 228, or EAF 231, or EAF 235 (3 hours).
  • PSY 215 (3 hours)
  • C&I 212 (2 hrs)
  • C&I 214 and C&I 216 (3 hours each), or C&I 289.75 (6 hrs)
  • Special methods course(s) (FCS 203 4 hours) and student teaching as required by each department (FCS only offers student teaching in spring semesters).
