Academic Advising

*Please note that for the duration of the Turner Hall renovation, the Family and Consumer Science advisinig office will be located at 302 N. Normal Street, just north of the Bone Student Center parking lot.

The FCS Advising Office is here to guide and motivate you to become an informed and active participant in your academic planning. With accurate information and planning you can maximize your time here at Illinois State University and achieve all of your academic goals. All essential advising related information for declared FCS majors and minors is contained on the FCS Advising Blackboard on iCampus

Who is advised in the FCS Advising office?

  • Undergratuate students with a minimum of 24 credit hours earned who are declared FCS majors.
  • If you have under 24 hours completed or you are classified as a general student, you are assigned an advisor in the University College Academic Advisement Center. Call (309) 438-7604 to schedule an appointment.

What do I do now that I am a declared FCS major with 24 or more credit hours earned?

  • Declared students with over 24 hours earned must submit a plan of study to the FCS advisor by email, blocking out by semester when they intend to take all courses needed to meet graduation requirements. This should be completed by the student the first semester of their sophomore year; or, in the case of a transfer student, during their first semester at ISU.
  • To assist in drafting a plan of study, students should reference their "progress to my degree" link posted in their student information on iCampus to know exactly which requirements have been met, and which remain outstanding.
  • The student and the advisor will meet to discuss the plan of study and make necessary revisions or additions.  Both the advisor and the student will keep copies of the student's plan of study. Students are required to bring their copy with them to every advisement session.
  • Students should have contact with their advisor each semester.  It is recommended that students meet with their advisor prior to the Advanced Registration Period, so that there is no question about which courses they need to register for next.
  • Use the SIGN UP SHEETS posted on the door of room 142 Turner Hall to schedule a meeting with FCS advisor Richard Kane.
  • Seniors in Family and Consumer Sciences are strongly encouraged to meet or e-mail the advisor regarding their last semester prior to the start of the Advanced Registration Period, to confirm they are on target for their anticipated graduation date.
